"Tejiendo Palabras": Boosting Literacy in Chile's "Piecitos" Schools
In an effort to close the learning gaps affecting 6 out of 10 second-grade children in Chile, we have launched the literacy program "Tejiendo Palabras" in partnership with the consulting firm Focus. This initiative seeks to transform classrooms in Chilean "Piecitos" schools into spaces of creativity and reflective learning.
A Learning Model Adapted to Local Reality
The program focuses on strengthening the capabilities of teachers and directors to successfully lead literacy instruction. Currently, the project benefits 68 children and 10 teachers across rural educational centers in San Juan de Pirque, Santa Marta de Talca, and Esmeralda de Molco.
These institutions are part of Piecitos Colorados, our Development Cooperation program that impacts more than 5,000 students across 8 Latin American countries. Thanks to technical support from Focus, these schools have optimized their pedagogical practices and improved their students' reading proficiency.
Based on the characteristics of each school, we seek to develop capabilities within teaching teams to successfully lead the learning process. Everything is based on systematic evaluation to make informed pedagogical decisions. — Melisa Meneses, Coordinator at Focus.
For 2026, the project has established a new roadmap focused on increasing reading fluency and consolidating reading habits as a solid cultural foundation for new generations.
Volunteering with Impact
Beyond academic training, the commitment of Prosegur professionals has been key to carrying out the project. Our volunteers have transformed the school environment through:
- The implementation of "Reading Corners" in the three participating schools.
- Storytelling sessions to encourage the students' imagination.
- The donation of 80 books per school, strengthening libraries from 1st to 8th grade.
We want the participation of our volunteers and the support for teachers to be the engine that allows students to improve their living conditions through education - Isabel Cerda, Head of the Prosegur Foundation in Chile.
With these actions, we reaffirm our purpose of ensuring that access to quality education is the foundation for a future of opportunities for Chile's new generations.
