Our Piecitos Colorados become writers

With the aim of encouraging and improving students' reading and writing habits from an early age, in 2021 we launched the First Latin American Storytelling Contest. An educational initiative, aimed at the more than 4,500 students from the 36 schools affiliated to Piecitos Colorados, so that they could travel through time and imagine a new world through words. The children were trained in writing short stories, creating characters and using literary tone, supported by new techniques such as infographics and podcasts, with the help of our partner Fundalectura.

Students between the ages of 5 and 17 from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay submitted 458 stories in which they gave shape to their dreams, ranging from futuristic narratives with interplanetary missions, to houses that float to avoid earthquakes, ships that travel to the past or anthropomorphic stories.

A team of literacy experts evaluated the formal aspects of each story (theme, elements of the literary genre or voice) and subsequently, renowned writers of children's and young people's literature in Latin America selected the best stories.

As a result, the first Piecitos Colorados digital book has been published with a total of 20 stories in three categories (5 illustrated stories, 10 children's stories and 5 pre-juvenile stories), which has been presented at the Bogotá International Book Fair.

The book is also published on an online site that can be accessed by children and adults alike, and can be downloaded free of charge here
